Introduction
The first precedent is the work of Tadao Ando, Azuma House, It can be used as a good example to explain the relationship between human and nature in Japan, in addition, this project can consider as a typical example to present how architecture designer achieves effective space management in limited space. the second precedent is the Trollwall restaurant, which focuses on the practice of complicated model form making, the third precedent is about the research on the influence of internal light on façade wall materials, it would be a detachable box and led light inside to test different internal light effect.
Architectural precedent: Azuma House
Key Concept
As Tadao Ando says,
'In its simple spatial composition, in its expression of the enclosure, and the way
light gives character to daily life's spaces, this house encapsulates my image
of Architecture.' Azuma House was one of the first works of Tadao Ando, also name as Row
House in Sumiyoshi, built in 1971. Azuma house located in the central areas of Osaka;
it was built to replace the traditional wooden-built houses of the area. The
most challenge part from the design of Azuma house for Tadao Ando was to
achieve highly self-sufficient living space and guaranteeing individual privacy
space on such a narrow place (building space only covers 33.7 square meters).
But the floor-space of Azuma House up to 64.7m2. Azuma House was
built between two dividing walls, it divided into three equally size sections
which including a patio and two spaces, it looks like a concrete box and had an
uncovered patio on the building centers. The relationship between human and
nature can be directly explained his design concept on Azuma House, as the uncovered patio provides an opportunity for the house owner to feel the light of
sun, in the winter with the cold and the rain when home-dwellers have to go
outside, in his idea of Azuma House, natural elements in architecture not just
are green things, it can be light, wind, rain and the temperature feeling from
different seasons.
Selected design element
This precedent is hard to pick one of these design elements to separately
introduce, what I am interested in Azuma house is his idea between human and
nature element, it is necessary for me to build the whole model of Azuma house
because I believe that is the best way for audiences and me to understand Tadao
Ando`s idea. In order to present the light effect on the uncovered patio, the best way for me is to present a section model, in addition, Azuma house has used
lots of fair-faced concrete which could create a psychological effect on the
observer, an extraordinary empathy due to the absence of decoration which
parallel with the Japanese culture, in general, Tadao Ando`s idea can only
presented when all the small design elements are combined!

How is the key concept reflected in the design studio?
his is my first time
to do research on works of Adao Ando, although I did not pick a stream in the
master program, personally I prefer to put more attention on housing and urban
condition. There are two reasons for me to pick Azuma House as the research
project on this course, first, it is important for me to understand the Master
work`s idea between human and nature, obviously! Tadao Ando tried to explain
the natural elements could be emphasized in another way, the range of natural
elements in architecture design are no longer constrained by what we could touch,
just like the natural plants, water, etc. there are so many ways for the house
holder to feel the nature, such as the sunlight change in a day, different
temperature from different seasons or wind and rain, the most interesting part
of Azuma house is the choice between building character and building functions,
building designers should not get rid of the character of the house to achieve
convenience. The second reason for me to pick Azuma house is fair-faced
concrete is the major building materials, I can use the concrete model to
present Azuma House, and I never try concrete model before! Both reasons for me
could help me develop my design and model presentation skill in the third term
design studio.
Geometrical description of the shape
Azuma House is a rectangle the house which faces the west street, built between two dividing walls, the floor area covers approximately 33.7 m2 and total floor area is 57m2. Azuma house is
a two-storey building, the width of façade is about 3.5m and the length of the
rectangle floor is about 14m, the height of Azuma House is about 6m and ceiling
height on every floor is about 3m. the whole building divided into three
equally size sections which including an uncovered patio and two spaces, in the
ground floor from west to east, the first section part include foyer and living
room, then the uncovered patio as the second section part connects the upper
floor with a north architectural concrete stair wall which starts at the east, the third part is used for the kitchen and bathroom. The upper level of this house
from west to east include the bedroom as the first section part, uncovered
patio as the middle section part and master room as the third section part. the
best scale for this project should be 1:50, the whole building would present
like a cuboid which width is about 7cm, height is about 12cm and length is
about 28cm, the thickness of the external wall set as 1cm, all wall made by
concrete, Acrylic to present glass door, and balsa wood board to make some
small furniture.

Architectural precedent: Trollwall Restaurant
Key concept
Reiulf Ramstad Arskitekter stated this project It’s a new cursor at the foot of the
Troll Wall. The architecture of the new visitor center next to the E139 highway
results from the site’s close relation to the impressive mountain wall, one of
Norway’s many natural attractions. The building has a simple yet flexible plan,
with a characteristic roof that derives its character from the majestic
surrounding landscape. These simple ways of design lend the building its
character and identity, which makes the service center an eye-catcher and an
architectural attraction in the region.
Selected Design Element
The Trollwall restaurant connect the surrounding landscape by its building form and the using of curtain wall, the merged triangle curtain wall as the façade present the features of the mountain, in addition, the glass curtain wall can achieve beautiful light effects such as the reflection of the sky, mountain, and cloud, which connect this project with nature, the using of timber on wall and roof stair also strengthen the connection between this project and the surrounding natural color. it is hard to explain the idea of the designer if I just pick one of them, so I decided to model the whole project. Especially focus on the ground concrete plaza, the multiple triangle shape curtain wall and the timber used on stairs and wall. How is the key concept reflected in the design studio?
I would choose my design studio which is related to
urban condition and housing design in the next terms, curtain wall is an element that commonly used in the public buildings, this project provide an opportunity
for me to practice the model making on the curtain wall, besides, the connection
between the characteristic roof of Trollwall restaurant and surrounding landscape
could be considered as a typical example for me and the audience to understand the relationship
between human and nature.
Geometrical description of the shape
The dimensions of this project still under the process
of collecting, so I would provide rough steps to express my stagey to make this
model. I am going to model all the building blocks of this precedent, the scale of model would be 1:50. There are four most important elements in this project should
be presented in model, the characteristic roof, curtain wall, ground plaza, and stairs
connected ground and roof, first of all, I would use cardboard to make the
basement to present the ground plaza, then I would use the laser cutting
machine to cut the plywood to assemble the form of this building (wall, roof), in
addition, the plywood could be used to present the stairs, furniture, and curtain
wall structure, the glass of curtain wall would be presented by 1mm acrylic panel.
Proposed Scale: 1:50
Materials: Plywood, cardboard and acrylic panel
Technique: Laser cutting, hand cutting
Time commitment: 30 hours
Budget: 80 AUD

Steven Holl stated that the new museum is sited at the gateway to the Contemporary International Practical Exhibition of Architecture in the lush green landscape of the Pearl Spring near Nanjing, China. It explores the shifting viewpoints, layers of space, and expenses of mist and water, which characterize the deep alternating spatial mysteries of early Chinese painting. What I am interested in Steve Holl`s work, Nanjing Sifang Art Museum is the using of White Hollow Polycarbonate sheet as the material of the external wall, Polycarbonate Hollow sheet has special properties when it is used as an architectural material, it is moldable, durable, lightweight, flame resistant, shatterproof, and energy efficient. The most attractive things are the light effect which presented by this material, we could see that both Nanjing Sifang Art Museum or Institute for Contemporary Art has the white hollow polycarbonate sheet external wall, the external wall is translucent but not transparent, it can make sure transmission of outside sunlight or internal electrical light especially the internal light can achieve an elegant light view at dawn or dusk and foggy day. So, the main purpose of precedent 3 is the research on the relationship between façade material and light.

Selected Design Element
The selected design element is the using of white
hollo polycarbonate sheet external wall, I wonder to figure out how the light
works on translucent but not transparent materials, this precedent would be
considered as an inspiration for me to think about this question, I am going to
model a detachable box rather than part of this project, I would use a detachable
box to test the light`s influence on different materials which are translucent
but not transparent, the model provide an opportunity for me to practice the
LED circuit design because this model would refer to the using of mini LED
light,
Not only Nanjing Sifang Art Museum but also the Institute
for Contemporary Art has the same design element, Steven Holl used the translucent
but not transparent material as the external wall material to achieve beautiful light effect and privacy protected the environment. The external wall material such
as the white Polycarbonate hollow sheet is very good for some public buildings,
for instance, the art gallery and Museum, I believe that it is good for me to
use LED light and translucent materials to present my design idea in the architectural
scale model in the future.
Geometrical description of the shape
I am going to make a detachable box frame by using the 3d printer
(I never try 3d printing before, It is important for me to practice the
operations of this machine), the dimensions of the detachable box should be
10cm x 10cm x 10cm, there also would be a space to set the LED lights and a small
hole for the wire which connects with a LED light switch, People can insert
different material panels on each face of the box to test the light effect.
Proposed Scale: no scale
Materials: LED light, battery, wire, switch, white PLA0
Technique: 3D printing. LED circuit design. Hand cutting
